Fall 2016 Season Kick-Off!

Fall is hands down my favorite time of year. After the insufferable heat of summer, to me there is no feeling in the world like stepping outside into the chill fall air and looking around to see the myriad wonderful shades of color in the turning leaves. Yup, my idea of a good time in the fall is pretty much a good book, a pumpkin spice latte, and a nice secluded tree under which to enjoy them. Continue reading “Fall 2016 Season Kick-Off!”

Summer 2016 Preview: 91 Days

Something about the American Prohibition era has always captured my imagination. What with the Gatsbyesque glitz and glam of the Roaring ’20s, the backwoods bootleggers, and the rise of organized crime in the cities, the Prohibition era offers a rich historical backdrop that exudes a certain treacherous charm all its own.  So even though 91 Days has seen comparatively little hype to this season’s heavyweights, it easily made my personal shortlist of most anticipated anime this season. Honestly, given the rarity of anime set during Prohibition, I probably would have been satisfied with the usual rollicking tale of mafia mayhem and vigilante vengeance, but fortunately, judging from the first episode, 91 Days appears to be gearing up for something a bit darker and more grounded than that. And I couldn’t possibly be happier about it. Continue reading “Summer 2016 Preview: 91 Days”

Summer 2016 Preview: This Art Club Has a Problem!

With the sheer volume of slice-of-life anime comedies available each season, any show in that genre usually has to do something new or noteworthy to catch my interest, like New Game!‘s fresh combination of moe cuteness and office humor. But once in a while, a show can manage to squeak into my schedule with average comedic value and characterization solely on the strength of its high production values. This season, the anime that managed that feat was This Art Club Has a Problem!, also known as Konobi. Continue reading “Summer 2016 Preview: This Art Club Has a Problem!”

Summer 2016 Preview: Amanchu!

Kozue Amano’s Aria series has long been one of those anime that I’ve been interested in watching but keep putting off for various reasons. My interest in her work was rekindled this past anime season, when I discovered my personal affinity for iyashikei anime via the most delightful Flying Witch. In a bit of a timely coincidence, one of the series scheduled to air this season is the anime adaptation of one of Amano’s other relaxing maritime manga, Amanchu!. Initially, I wasn’t aware that the two series were by the same creator, but from the very beginning of the first episode, the similarity is impossible to miss. So, if you’re like me, looking for something to fill the void left by Flying Witch at the end of last season, Amanchu! could be exactly the show you’re looking for. Summer 2016 Preview: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

What can you expect from a show featuring the extraordinary life of a pink-haired, antennae’d, green-shades-wearing, psychic bishounen high-schooler with a loud blue-green jacket and a morose attitude about everything? Apparently, a fast-paced and legitimately funny comedy with a knack for subverting its viewers’ expectations. Who knew? Continue reading “Summer 2016 Preview: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.”

Summer 2016 Preview: Mob Psycho 100

With all the moe-floof that’s currently dominating my simulcast schedule for this season, I was starting to worry that there weren’t going to be any truly ostentatious, outrageous, over-the-top action anime to cleanse my palate from all that saccharine cuteness. Until now, I’ve been pinning all of my hopes on a certain promising collaboration between Studio BONES and ONE, creator of the beloved One-Punch Man. The anime in question is Mob Psycho 100, and if the first episode is anything to go by, it’s going to scratch that particular itch just fine. Continue reading “Summer 2016 Preview: Mob Psycho 100”

Summer 2016 Preview: Qualidea Code

When watching the announcements for each new anime season, the inevitable crop of light novel adaptations always ends up leaving me feeling conflicted. On the one hand, it’s entirely possible that one of them will end up being the next Sword Art Online or Oregairu. On the other hand, it’s also possible that every one of them will turn out to be tepid chuuni power fantasies or ecchi extravaganzas. Continue reading “Summer 2016 Preview: Qualidea Code”

Summer 2016 Preview: New Game!

With the number of “cute girls doing cute things” anime released with every new season, I suppose it was inevitable that creators would start branching out and finding new settings other than Generic Anime High School #427 at which to unfold their moeblob fantasies. One environment that has remained relatively untrodden by moe anime so far is the workplace. But I’m here today to deliver some breaking news: moe has grown up and gotten a job! Don’t believe me? Check out New Game! Continue reading “Summer 2016 Preview: New Game!”
